THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH

David RossYoung Ralph Cross stands beside the minor road between Castleton and Hutton-in-the-Hole, at the northern tip of Blakey Ridge, in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. No one knows precisely when the cross (or the nearby 'Old Ralph Cross') was built, but it probably dates to the Middle Ages. The cros is the symbol of the Nationark, but it is only one of numerous crosses that dot the moors. On this occasion I drove up onto the moor from a cottage we were renting near Marton and was rewarded with a fantastic sunset. I love the shape of the cross against the colourful western sky.David Ross Photography signature
