THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH

David RossKildalton Cross is one of the best preserved and most impresive of the medieval (and earlier) carved crosses that dot the west coast of Scotland. The cross stands in the churchyard of the ruined church at Kildalton, on the southern coast of Islay, east of Port Ellen. I had hoped to catch the early morning sun casting a golden light on the cross, but when I arrived the sunlight was pretty much non-existent. So I followed my maxim - if the photographic gods hand you a lemon, make lemon-ade. I walked to the other side of the cross and took this photo facing into the sun. I love the strong shape of the cross-head against the dark and yellow sky.David Ross Photography signature
