THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH

Sunrise at Staffin Bay on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. We were staying a very short walk from the coast. Before dawn I grabbed my camera gear, slipped through our landlord's garden, and followed a traildown to the shore. The weather on Skye is nothing if not unpredictable; at first I thought the sunrise would be a non-event, with heavy clouds to the east. But the clouds parted enough to allow golden sunlight to break through, allowing this brief view eastwards towards Gairloch on the Scottish mainland.
