THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
Camber Sands, near Rye, East Sussex. We were staying in a lovely cottage for the week a short walk from the beach at Camber. Early in the morning I grabbed my camera gar and walked to the Sands in time to photograph the dawn. The thing I loved most about Camber Sands is how the huge expanse of sand acted as a wonderful reflective surface, mirroring the dawn sky. The other thing I recall about this scene is on a more personal level - I had just purchased a brand new Nikon D200, and this was the first time I used it. A love affair was born (though I later switched my affections to the D200's younger sister, the D700)!
ABOUT CAMBER SANDS
Camber Sands is a part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and is the only dune system in East Sussex. The beach is located near the historic port of Rye, where the River Rother empties into Rye Bay. The dune system at Camber was fortified during WWII and used for troop exercises, and it played a military role in the classic 1962 war film, The Longest Day, when it was used to represent the Norrmandy landing beaches.More recently it has been regularly used for kitesurfing, landboarding and kite buggying.
