THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
Cockley Beck is a hamlet (actually just a couple of houses and a rural telephone, looking rather oddly out of place) at the eastern foot of Hardknott Pass. This view is taken from the middle of the River Duddon just east of the crossroads at Cockley Beck. The thing I recall most about taking this photo was that I went to great pains to get my camera close to the water level, but what I didn't realise was that in doing so I bent the open end of my rubber boot into a funnel shape, and as I squatted to take this photo my boot scooped up the rushing water. It took some time to dry out the inside of the boot.
