THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
At the extreme eastern end of Eskdale the ground rises and the road winds up to Hardknott Pass. Just below the crest of the pass are the extensive remains of a Roman Fort. This is truly one of the most evocative places in the Lake District; I find myself wondering what life was like for the soldiers who manned the fort, here in such a remote part of the Empire. It must have a pretty bleak place to be in winter! On this morning in late August I arrived well before dawn, hoping for a clear morning and good light. I'd say my wishes were granted!
