THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
Fast Castle is one of the lesser-known medieval castles that dot the Scottish coast. It is magnificently situated on a steep-sided outcrop of rock joined to the mainland by a very narrow neck of land. The location is utterly magnificent, with cliff-top walks in both directions and wonderful views north along the Lothian coast towards Dunbar. I was staying at a cottage just a few miles away, north of Coldingham. I must have visited Fast Castle at least three or four times over the course of the week I was there. On this occasion I recall that there was a chap from Newcastle who was planning to camp out for the night within the castle ruins. We had a chat and he offered to keep out of sight while I photographed the late evening light on the castle and cliffs. I don't think I ever caught his name, but I sure appreciate his help creating this lovely view!
