THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
A low stone wall stands on the edge of Loch Assynt, protecting the approach to Ardvreck Castle. This view looks south towards Calda House, built in the 18th century when the laird decided that he needed a new, more modern and comfortable dwelling. The house, like the castle, now stands as a roofless ruin. Over the course of a wonderful week in Assynt I must have photographed the castle at Ardvreck on a half dozen occasions and this was by far the best light I encountered, flooding everything with a golden glow. I love Sutherland!
