THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
The red sandstone ruins of Tantallon Castle perch on the cliffs at the entrance to the Firth of Forth. The castle is one of the most dramatically situated ruins in Scotland. To get this view I had skirt the edge of a private, fenced area beside the castle, and scramble down the slope to the shore. From there I had an even rougher scramble along the rocky shoreline for about half a mile - I was fortunate that the tide was out! I wandered among the tidepools until I found this wonderful location to photograph the late evening sunlight bathing the castle and the cliffs in a beautiful golden colour. Out of the corner of my eye as I took this photo I could see the bird sanctuary on Bass Rock, in the middle of the Firth, glowing with evening light.
